Expressing worship: singing

Posted by Adam Johnson on Wednesday, 09 May 2012 in Expressing Worship

 Singing blog post

Psalm 47:6 says, "Sing praises to God, sing praises to our King, sing praises."

Why do we sing to God? Why don’t we just say what is on our hearts and minds? As I was thinking about this expression of worship I asked myself these two questions.

When we sing we convey emotion much better than when we speak. Singing is a way to put life to words and put emotion behind them. Have you ever hade someone write a song about you or for you? I’ve had a song written for me before and it really impacted me.  It wasn’t only the words but the melody of the words that made me feel special and loved. I wrote a song for my wife for our wedding day, you could ask her and she would tell you that, that song was one of the most memorable part of our wedding for her.

When we sing about something we declare its importance in our lives. That’s why singing to God needs to be an everyday part of our life. Not just Sunday mornings or during rehearsals.

Singing is mentioned121 times in the Bible. It is the most recorded of the commandments, to sing to the Lord.

Does this mean you have to be a good singer to sing praises to God? Nope! God’s not concerned with the quality of the sound coming from our mouths as long as the heart behind it is true.

As we approach this weekends worship services let’s remember that we don’t sing to show everyone how good we are. We sing as a way to express our worship to God. Don’t let singing become something we do without thinking about it. Be mindful that each note coming from your mouth is worship.

1 Chronicles 16:23 Sing to the LORD, all the earth; proclaim his salvation day after day.
